Selwyn Hughes

Selwyn Hughes was a Welsh minister, author, and teacher whose writings have influenced millions of Christians around the world. A native of Wales, Hughes grew up in a community deeply shaped by the legacy of the Welsh Revival. His early years were marked by a strong Christian heritage, which later inspired his commitment to ministry and spiritual revival. After working in the Welsh coal mining industry during his youth, he studied theology in Bristol and pursued a calling to Christian ministry.

Following his ordination, Hughes served for eighteen years in Pentecostal churches across Wales and England. In the 1960s, he began writing short daily devotional notes for members of his congregation. What started as simple Bible-reading guides soon grew into one of the most widely read Christian publications in the world, Every Day with Jesus. For over forty years, he personally wrote devotional reflections that eventually reached nearly one million readers in more than 130 countries. Three hundred sixty-six of these readings were compiled to create the year-long print devotional, Every Day with Jesus.

In 1965, Hughes founded the organization Crusade for World Revival (CWR), a ministry dedicated to Christian discipleship. Under his leadership, CWR became a respected international training and publishing ministry, producing resources that equipped pastors, counsellors, and lay Christians alike.

Hughes authored more than fifty books on Christian living. Despite enduring personal tragedies, including the deaths of his wife and two sons, he remained steadfast in his faith and continued to encourage others through his writing and ministry. In recognition of his contribution to Christian education and spiritual formation, he received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Brunel University in 2005.

Hughes was welcomed home to heaven on January 9, 2006. His enduring legacy of encouragement continues to point readers to Christ each day.
